This pizza recipe is the one Dad always made in my home, growing up. Of course, he didn't use a recipe, but I think I've figured it out pretty well. It tastes exactly like his.
This is probably the most traditional pizza made in our family. Crust, sauce, pepperoni, and lots of mozzarella cheese & parmesan! My whole family loves pizza!
Pizza is one of those wonderful dishes that you can add just about anything for toppings...even the crust can be made however you like it, thin, Sicilian, deep dish. It's all a matter of preference. Thin or thick, load it up or keep it plain. It's just good no matter what!
What makes a great pizza is the sauce and a good crust. The toppings depend strictly on what you enjoy on it.
Have a pizza night and let the kids make their own personal pizzas...they love doing this, and you just made another great memory!
Grammy's New York Style Pizza Sauce:
1 Tbsp. olive oil
2-3 tsp. fresh garlic, minced (depends on how much you like garlic)
1 (28oz.) can crushed tomatoes
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 tsp. dried basil (if you have fresh, use 2-3 leaves)
1/8 tsp. crushed red pepper (opt.)
Lightly sauté the minced garlic in olive oil, being careful not to burn the garlic (it will get bitter). Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, oregano & basil. Add the red pepper if you like it spicy.
Cook on low (bubbles should barely break the surface) for about 20 minutes or until oil comes to the top. Stir it occasionally so it doesn't burn on the bottom.
Use it immediately or store in the refrigerator or freezer.
(My recipe for Pizza Dough is on the blog under "Breads", it's quick, easy and so delicious! But, if you want to take a short-cut, just pick up pizza dough from you local grocer.
Be encouraged!
